Not into cooking eggs or meat in mine, however, I recently read an article on uses for your microwave and it really got me thinking. I decided to summarize some of the items I've not thought of or never used mine for. How many are new to you?
1. It’s a Disinfectant
Who knew you could get rid of scummy bacteria lurking on one of your filthiest kitchen items - the sponge. According to a study, 2 minutes at full power kills more than 99% of the germs on it! It even kills E. coli, so that's a good thing. Just get your sponge good and wet, place it in a microwave-safe bowl, and turn it on. Supposedly you can also disinfect soft pet and baby toys, but I don't know how you'd check to make sure they didn't melt first!
Have you cooked bacon in yours? This I've done, but in doing so, I go through a lot of paper towels. The paper towels absorb the fat, so it's easy cleanup, but I think bacon in the oven on parchement is just as easy. Directions say to place a few layers of paper towels on a microwave-safe plate, lay 6 slices on top, and add more towels on top. Takes about 4-6 minutes, but watch carefully after four minutes so nothing burns.
3. Prepping Herbs
Microwave your fresh herbs, uncovered, for 10 second bursts up to 2 minutes. Toss between bursts. In doing so, your dry your herbs for use in a spice grinder or to create mixtures. You can use up your herbs before they go bad with this method as well. This is best for the woody stem varieties such as thyme, oregano, rosemary, and marjoram.
Pop them in the micro for ten seconds and you can squeeze them right out of their paper skins. I so have to try this.
5. Ripening your Avocado.
Prick the skin with a fork a few times and microwave for 30 seconds. Test firmness, and repeat until it's how you like it. It doesn't affect flavor. Perfect for guac.
6. Do you Bake with Yeast?
Well bless your soul. I tried homemade bread just a few weeks ago. A ROCK!
Using the microwave helps dough to rise faster by putting a cup or bowl of hot bowling water alongside of your dough in the micro. Shut the door...steam rising.
7. Speaking of Steam
Do it yourself SPA. Perfect during Covid-19 as the salons keep having to shut down. Wet a towel of your desired size, squeeze out excess water, put it in a bowl..and warm at 30 second intervals. The towel can get very hot...be careful. When the temperature desired is reached, you can use it for facials, hair treatments, warming your calves during a pedicure, and so much more.
8. Wax on, Wax off
Re-purpose your old candles, especially the ones in pretty jars! Pop your almost empty candle jar in the microwave for 20 seconds to melt the remaining wax, use a paper towel to clean. I found I had to do this twice to get it all.
9. Your significant other is Late
You made a lovely dinner and it's sitting in foil on the stove. Pop it into the microwave box, shut the door...it works like an incubator. Don't turn it on though...
10. For those of you that don't use your microwave at all
It's another cabinet. Makes a great bread cabinet, crackers, soup bowls...just don't forget about them if you've put food in there!
