What Motivates You?

My mother shared an interesting post in the editorial page of the newspaper this week, written by a local minster named Rev. Jonathan Zenz.

He mentioned some thoughts that really resonated;

"The greatest disservice that I could do to myself is to not learn from the time I spend in the liminal space between what was and what will be."

The other was a question, "How do we as a society move through the current threshold we are crossing with ease and grace?"

What motivates you

Great thoughts.  Just had to share them.

I also had a discussion with my branch manager who faces the challenge of keeping agents engaged in weekly Zoom meetings.

He asked us this week to bring our discussion questions.

One of the things that I think about, too often in the middle of the night, is the question of motivation.

The Tucson real estate market is moving along at a good clip, all things Covid-19 considered.  We have such an issue with supply and demand, (low inventory) that the prices maintain and the buyers are competitive.  It's a market where you really need a real estate professional to assist in your transaction.

So, we get a lot of you-rah-rah encouragement from on high about how busy we are and how productive we can be if we just get out there.

What motivates you

And yet, I know many average agents out there facing disillusionment and doubt.  There is a line in a real estate career - you could put all you can into it, and still struggle.  You can call 100 folks but reach no lead.  You can send 100 letters and receive no reply.  It happens.

Real estate success, in my book, is about consistency and communication.  I don't have a lucky rabbit's foot.  I rarely luck out with a stranger walking through my door wanting a million dollar house.  Over 80 percent of my business is referral and repeat clients.

So back to that average agent.

How do we motivate them during a time of social distancing?

As a manager, or a corporation, how do we inspire that determination to keep trying, keep reaching, keep going?

What motivates you

I asked my manager, based on his Zoom request,  to call my co-workers - there's about 50 in our branch, a great many who fall into the "average" category.

What motivates you?

How do you react to a failure or a rejection or a down time?

What keeps you going?

I think helping to motivate the average agent is about more than bragging about what the top agents do.  It's more about numbers. (and no...that's not all the managers do...it's just one of the items that stands out to me)

I'm lucky that I am satisfied and content with my success.  I am exactly where I want to be and I am constantly searching and implementing ways to stay here in this place.  That doesn't mean I don't have my down days.  My self doubt.  My fears.

But I can't let those negative thoughts rule.

I remember a pastor's wife  often sharing a familiar phrase.  "Garbage in, garbage out"  I'm sure you can get the jist of her meaning, especially with today's social media, etc.

These are the things I think about, or want to think about.  I like to make the best of the time of what was, and what will be.

What motivates you?  How do you react to failure?
