The Best Advice Ever

I ran across this question a few weeks back and have had these thoughts ruminating in the recesses of my mind.  I decided to put them to rest by posting my views on the “The Best advice I’ve ever received” in our industry.

There’s a couple of directions one can take with this question.

1. Advice from a teacher/trainer towards agent behavior and practices

2. Advice from peers with regards on how to treat our clients

Or …any variety of those two scenarios.

The Best Advice Ever

The first thought that came to my mind was something I’d heard repeatedly with different phrasing, right about the time I was switching brokers.  It was,  "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten."

This is what motivated me when I first began at Long Realty 3 years ago.  I’d already been an agent for 7 years, but something clicked and I decided to make a change.  Was it my attitude, the broker switch, the culmination of time…what made my business suddenly soar?

The other key piece of advice was from my son, who was extremely good at sales.  He’s also great at customer service.  Heck, he was great at McDonalds long, long ago.

As a brand spanking new REALTOR, I’d called him up to ask how I could succeed with my introverted personality.  I knew already that I had difficulty in selling my skills as an artist, and as a singer/performer – and those were two facets of my earning capacity very close to my heart.

He said to me, "It's not SALES"

That was it.  Three words.

Looking back, I still hear them resonating.  You see, I firmly believe in the golden rule, and strive to treat others in the same way I’d like to be treated myself.  It doesn’t mean I WILL be treated in a great manner, it simply means that I’m going to treat you – my client – as if you were me.

I like my phone calls answered.  I like answers.  I like good service.  I like a minimum of errors. I like hot food cooked well. I like my emails answered.  Nothing magical, nothing over the top.  Just predictable, good service and good communication. 

So that’s what YOU'LL get. (minus the hot food) You’ll likely get more than that.  But my promise is “golden”.

 

What's interesting is my son recently "hired" me to be his real estate agent as he and his newlywed wife began their home search.  I'll have to ask him how I did at "sales".  :)

Hi Cara - Your son was spot on with that advice. The sales guys sell cars or cell phones - we provide client service, and the difference winds up being huge, but so do the rewards, monetary and otherwise.
